  • Struck for Caesar Maximus during the reign of his Father, Emperor Maximinus.
  • NGC Certified to Ch VF, Strike 5/5, Surface 4/5 (very high subgrades for tetradrachms).
  • Pedigree: Ex. Victory England List (precursor to CNG), 1980s, with card.
  • Dated to the Emperor's 3rd regnal year denoted by Greek letter Γ = 236/7 CE.
  • Emmett: 3333/3 (rated as R3, very Rare), 13.76g (heavy flan). 
  • Obverse: Draped & cuirassed bare bust right.
  • Reverse: Selene bust right, moon crescent before, to left date letters L Γ.
  • Emperor Maximinus appointed his son Maximus Caesar around 236 CE, but he held little real power. Both were murdered by the Praetorian Guard in May 238 CE, during the Siege of Aquileia in the Year of the Six Emperors.
  • Selene was the Greek goddess of the moon. She was also known as Mene.
