  • Plautilla was the wife of Emperor Caracalla.
  • Minted at Rome between 202 to 205 CE during the reign of her father-in-law, Emperor Septimius Severus.
  • Approx. 19mm, 3.12g, RIC 369 (rated as Scarce), RSC 25.
  • Certified by NGC to Ch VF. 
  • Obverse: PLAUTILLA AVGVSTA, draped bust right with hair in horizontal waves and drawn into a coiled plait on neck.
  • Reverse: VENVS VICTRIX, Venus naked to waist, standing half-left, holding apple & palm, at right shield, at left Cupid holding helmet.
  • Venus Victrix, Venus the Victorious, a Romanised aspect of the armed Aphrodite that Greeks had inherited from the East, where the goddess Ishtar remained a goddess of war, and Venus could bring victory to a Emperor.
  • Fulvia Plautilla was born about 185 CE. Her father was a commander in the Praetorian Guard & was cousin & friend to Emperor, Septimius Severus. They arranged for Plautilla to marry Septimius's son and co-Emperor, Caracalla, in 202 CE. The marriage was unhappy & Caracalla despised Plautilla. In 205 CE, Plautilla's father was arrested and executed for treachery and she and her brother were exiled. Plautilla was murdered on Caracalla's orders when Septimius Severus died in 211 CE. Her coins are from the reign Septimius Severus.
