- Philip Deck was a freeholder and bookseller and the Postmaster of Bury.
- Struck to honor one of Britain's most heralded military commanders of the 18th century, including his principal role in the American Revolution. He surrendered to George Washington in 1781; in the following year, he became Governor General of India.
